Do Not Confuse Familiar With Safe
Familiarity has excellent marketing.
It arrives with a feeling of recognition: I know how to do this. I know how to earn affection here. I know what this silence means and how quickly I should begin trying to fix it.
That recognition can feel like chemistry.
But sometimes what feels natural is simply what you practiced earliest.
If affection was unpredictable, predictability may initially feel dull. If love required proving yourself, someone who likes you without an audition may seem suspiciously easy. If conflict was loud, calm disagreement can feel emotionally vacant.
Do not distrust every familiar feeling. Just ask a second question.
Does this feel good because it is good for me, or because I already know my role?
Safety may be less intoxicating at first because it does not activate all the skills you developed for surviving uncertainty.
Give yourself time to learn a new kind of familiar.
