You Do Not Have to Win the Breakup

Leaving with dignity is more useful than leaving with the final word.

Breakups tempt otherwise sensible people into courtroom behavior.

We assemble exhibits. We remember dates. We want the other person to admit that our interpretation is the correct one and that the ending proves what we suspected all along.

Sometimes they were wrong. Sometimes you were. Usually the relationship contains enough evidence for both people to construct a convincing closing argument.

But there is no judge.

The final conversation is rarely improved by turning it into a competition over who gets to leave morally undefeated. If you need to say what happened, say it. If an apology is owed, offer it. If a boundary is necessary, make it plain.

Then resist the urge to keep litigating after the relationship has already delivered its verdict.

You do not need them to agree with your account in order to learn from it.

The most useful thing to take from an ending is not victory. It is information you can carry into the next beginning.
