The Apology With an Escape Hatch

A real apology does not spend most of its time explaining why you should not be hurt.
Editorial cover for The Apology With an Escape Hatch

‘I'm sorry you took it that way.’

‘I'm sorry, but you know how stressed I've been.’

‘I'm sorry if anyone was offended.’

These sentences wear the clothing of apology while keeping one hand on the exit.

A useful apology names the action, recognizes its effect, and accepts responsibility without immediately asking the injured person to manage the apologizer's discomfort.

It does not require groveling.

It requires clarity.

The same standard applies to your own apologies.

Notice the urge to explain before you have acknowledged. Context may matter later. Begin with the part that belongs to you.

‘I said something cruel. You did not deserve it. I'm sorry.’

That is a sturdy sentence.

Repair needs fewer decorative cushions than we think.
