The Regret That Keeps Asking for a Retrial
If only I had stayed.
If only I had left sooner.
If only I had said yes, said no, taken the job, made the call, seen the warning, known then what I know now.
Regret speaks fluent hindsight.
It gives past-you access to information that only present-you possesses and then criticizes her for failing to use it.
Be fairer.
Ask what you knew then. Ask what you feared. Ask what need you were trying to meet.
This is not an excuse for every bad decision. Responsibility matters.
But responsibility should produce learning, not endless prosecution.
Extract the lesson as specifically as you can.
Then let the case close.
A mistake has already taken enough from you if it also taught you something useful.
