When Chemistry Is Doing All the Work

Chemistry is persuasive because it makes possibility feel like evidence.

A look across a room can make you imagine compatibility. A long night of conversation can feel like intimacy. Desire has a marvelous talent for filling blank spaces with flattering assumptions.

Enjoy it. Chemistry is one of life's better surprises. Just do not assign it responsibilities it has not earned.

Notice what remains when the excitement is asked to do ordinary things. Can you make plans without confusion? Can one of you be disappointed without the other becoming cruel? Does affection survive inconvenience? Can you discuss money, time, exes, family, or boundaries without turning every difference into a referendum on the relationship?

Compatibility is less cinematic. It appears in calendars, apologies, patience, and the willingness to be understandable.

If the relationship only feels extraordinary when nothing difficult is being asked of it, chemistry may be carrying more than its share.
