When Someone Gives You a Backhanded Compliment

You are not required to unwrap every insult just because it arrived with a bow.
Editorial cover for When Someone Gives You a Backhanded Compliment

‘You look great for your age.’

‘I wish I could be as confident as you and just wear anything.’

‘You're actually really smart once people get to know you.’

Some compliments leave a small bruise.

You do not need to conduct a seminar every time this happens. Sometimes a raised eyebrow is sufficient. Sometimes ‘What an interesting thing to say’ does excellent work.

And sometimes the relationship matters enough to be direct: ‘I know you may have meant that kindly, but it did not land that way.’

The important part is not finding the perfect comeback.

It is trusting the part of you that noticed the sting.

Politeness does not require pretending a barb became harmless because someone attached praise to the front of it.
