The Life You Thought You Would Have
You can grieve a house you never bought, a child you never had, a marriage that never became what you imagined, or a career whose door quietly closed.
These losses are strange because there may be no photograph, funeral, anniversary, or socially acceptable moment when everyone agrees you are allowed to be sad.
But imagined futures occupy real emotional space.
Do not mock yourself for mourning one.
Just be careful not to build a shrine so large that the life you still have must live in its shadow.
The future you expected was one possibility, not a contract. Its disappearance does not mean every meaningful version of your life disappeared with it.
Grieve specifically. Name what you wanted. Name what you miss.
Then look around for what is still unfinished.
Sometimes starting over begins when you stop asking the present to apologize for not becoming the future you once predicted.
